Simon is the mystic, or philosopher, in Lord of the Flies.  Until the final chapter, he and Piggy are the only ones who understand where the evil lies in the island - inside each person. Simon is the first to clearly come to this realiization and he does so when he goes into his trances.  His journey into the bower is like a religious man's search for self-knowledge and understanding.  It is similar to Jesus's time spent wandering or even like Thoreau's time at Walden's pond. It is as much a journey of the spirit and mind as it is a journey of the body.  He goes into the bower.  In chapter 8, Simon has his "conversation" with the Lord of the Flies and his understanding is complete - his journey is over.
