Until the final chapter, he and Piggy are the only ones who understand where the evil lies in the island - inside each person. Simon is the first to clearly come to this realiization and he does so when he goes into his trances. His journey into the bower is like a religious man's search for self-knowledge and understanding. It is similar to Jesus's time spent wandering or even like Thoreau's time at Walden's pond. It is as much a journey of the spirit and mind as it is a journey of the body. He goes into the bower. In chapter 8, Simon has his "conversation" with the Lord of the Flies and his understanding is complete - his journey is over.
