At the end of Chapter Four, the tension is mounting between Jack and Ralph because the hunters, who have been busy killing a pig, let the fire go out. Jack refuses to let Piggy have any of the meat from the pig until Simon gives him some of his meat. Jack relents and lets Piggy have some meat. To break the tension, Maurice asks Jack where he found the pig. As Jack tells the story, Maurice pretends to be the pig and others pretend to beat him. They chant, "Kill the pig cut her throat. Bash her in." So the killing of the pig is mimed and the chant is repeated. This makes Ralph both envious and angry, so he takes the conch, marches off while announcing he is calling a meeting. At the meeting, he will say "Things are falling apart." This is Ralph's way of recognizing the boys are becoming more savage in their actions and less concerned with getting rescued.
