    After the deaths of Piggy and Simon and the forced defection of Samneric to Jack's tribe, Ralph is alone. In the final chapter of the novel, Jack is hunted like an animal by Jack's tribe, particularly by the barbaric Roger, who stalks him with "a stick sharpened at both ends." It is only the appearance of the British naval officer that saves Ralph and signals the return of "civilization" to the island.
