    It is Jack, the hunter, who represents the clash between civilized society and savagery:  "Bollocks to the rules! we're strong--we hunt," he shouts.  In his fixation with hunting, the destructive Jack, who paints his face with mud and charcoal, neglects the boys' connection to the civilized world, the fire, to go out.
