In Chapter Eight, after Jack leaves the tribe, Simon suggests that some of the boys climb the mountain to find out if there really is a beast and if there is, what he looks like. Most of the boys are terrified. Even Piggy insists the exploration will serve no purpose. Simon retorts,"What else is there to do." This suggests that Simon realizes the only way to deal with the fear of the beast is to face it. Simon seems to know that unknown fear is often worse that knowing what one is up against. He, of all the boys, will really find out what the beast is.
