We are never given insight into the reactions of the boys' parents. Instead, we must rely on the only adult that encounters the boys after their island society has disintegrated. The naval officer that lands on the island is disappointed that "British boys" did not "put up a better show" than they did. The irony, of course, is that a savage war (started and fought by adults) is raging in Europe during this time.

We are also told that the officer is also "moved and embarrassed" by the group of filthy, weeping boys. In true military form, he "turn[s] away" to give them time "to pull themselves together."
