In what way, do you think, contextual information affects the reader's understanding of the modern english in Lord of the Flies?

    If you are speaking about second language (L2/ESOL) students, I would think that the context of the story might get difficult with all the allegories that are found. For example, the real meaning of the Lord of the Flies as compared to "the beast"- If you are a learner of modern English, you might want to compare it to similar lore that might help the student understand the language used about it.

    The symbolism of the conch, the head of the pig, Simon's hallucinations, the children's chants, all these elements are intrinsic and must be laid out for discussion prior to reading. You are correct, however, that for understanding purposes the context might affect the reader.
