The scene in which Jack and members of his "tribe" kill the sow is foreshadowing to the scene on the darkened beach where Simon is killed. After discovering how to disguise themselves by painting their faces, Jack and the boys feel emboldened in a way that they had not felt previously. They find the sow and the suckling piglets and attack her with unbridled lust and fury. All the boys attack her from every direction and continue until well after she is dead.
With this same mob mentality, the group attacks Simon on the beach when he stumbles out of the forest to tell them about the parachute man on the mountain. None of the boys individually would have perpetuated such a crime, but collectively, they murder Simon with a vengeance even after they hear his all-too-human voice crying out in the darkness.
