The boys wanted to reenact the hunt of the pig that got away. Robert was chosen to act as the pig. As the boys circled Robert, they jabbed their spears at him and hit him. They became caught up in their play and begin to actually hurt Roger. Ralph, along with the other boys, loses himself for a moment to the “beast” within himself. This shows a change in the boys because they begin to let go of their obligations to protect each other. They begin to let the “beast” take over their thoughts and actions.
