In the beginning of chapter 9, Simon finds himself alone in the forest and discovers the dead pilot of their plane and sees his parachute flapping in the wind.  He realizes that he and the other boys have mistaken this parachute for the "beast".  After Simon realizes this, he runs toward the fire that Jack and the other boys have at the beach for their feast.  Meanwhile, the boys, including Piggy and Ralph, are all having fun at the feast eating their freshly killed pig.  The group turns chaotic due to their excitement. When they see Simon stumble out of the forest they think that he is the beast and end up killing him, allowing him to drift out to sea.
