What is all over Ralph in the first chapter? Why might that be important?

Is that pointing to the clothes that he tore off, or something else?

Ralph is covered in what he calls "creepers" which is just the thick underbrush of the jungle. He's tangled in vines and other plants and he can't seem to get himself free to assess his situation. The jungle itself is personified throughout the book. It is not simply the setting of the story, but an entity, a character, in and of itself. This is one of the foes with which the young men must battle against during their struggle on the island. The fact that the book begins with Ralph tangled among the jungle is important because it introduces the jungle herself and the struggles that they will come to face throughout the book.
