    Because of his asthma (which Ralph calls his "ass-mar") Piggy cannot run or swim. Piggy's overprotective aunt did not allow him to learn how to swim, so in the first chapter of the novel he stands "palely and fatly naked" by the lagoon while Ralph plunges in.
