Simon is the loner of the tribe of boys. He is the first of the boys to realize the truth about the nature of the Beast. Ironically, he is killed by Jack and his band of hunters, who represent savagery. When Simon's body washes out into the ocean, the phosphorescent effect causes the body to glow eerily. He is the pure light of the tribe, but they have snuffed it and him out.
