Only the hunt and violence make sense to Jack. He lives on the thrill of tracking and killing prey, eventually dissolving from a normal, civilized boy into a bloodthirsty savage. Building shelters, maintaining the fire, attempting rescue: none of these register in Jack's world.

What Jack understands is chaos and force. He realizes how to camouflage the faces of the hunters in order to mask them among the jungle, & he designs weapons to use in the hunt. He repeatedly assaults Piggy, punching him and breaking his nose. He also appoints Roger as his torturer, using him to gain information that he needs. He wantonly lights a fire, in order to force Ralph from his hiding place. He does not stop to think how it may destroy the island, & thereby destroy their livelihood. All he cares for is power and control.
