    Ralph begins the novel a straightforward , sensible young man. He believes that structure and organization are key to their survival and rescue.

    As the novel progresses,, Ralph loses some of his control and gives in to physical displays of force, and the inability to think things through rationally.

    By the end of the novel, Ralph feels panic, desolation, and loss of  humanity.
