In "Lord of the Flies", how did the boys end up on the jungle island?

    The boys are survivors of a plane crash having been, in Ralph's words, "dropped" by the pilot (p2). Piggy states he saw the plane was on fire and that they had been "attacked" (p2).

    We are only given basic hints as to why they were on the plane in the first place. The suggestion is that they were being evacuated because of war involving nuclear weapons - "Didn't you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb?" (p9).
