Piggy's glasses or "specs" are a symbol of his intelligence and devotion to reason. He is constantly thinking in terms of "what grownups would do" and is faithful to what he believes is an "adult" way of running things. Piggy is devoted to order, as represented by the conch, and believes in thinking problems through carefully. Piggy's positive attributes, however, are not valued by the other boys on the island. The boys, especially Jack's tribe, value aggression and power more than intellect. Piggy has the makings of a strong leader in an ordered society, but on the island he is ineffectual.
