   At the beginning of the story, Ralph is just like any other typical boy that Piggy has encountered.  Ralph judges Piggy on his outward appearance and makes fun of him.  Ralph gives Piggy his nickname and makes fun of Piggy for having asthma and for being unable to swim or do much of anything else.  Ralph wants to have fun.  As the story progresses and Piggy and Ralph stick together, Ralph begins to rely more on Piggy.  In chapter 1, Ralph essentially ignored Piggy.  By chapter 5, he is listening to Piggy.  When Piggy tells Ralph at the end of chapter 5 that Jack hates both of them, but especially hates him, Piggy, Ralph is listening.  It's not until the very end though that Ralph fully appreciates Piggy for the good, intelligent, and loyal friend he was.  When Ralph weeps at the end, some of those tears are for the loss of Piggy because Ralph knows he'll never meet another person as good and loyal as Piggy.
