Chapter seven shows the boys in their first pig hunt, and by chance it is Ralph who wounds the wild boar. He only manages a glancing blow to its snout, and it escapes. Ralph and Jack are competing for the group's attention when Roger begins to act like a pig, making "mock rushes" at the group. After the boys get carried away and actually hurt Roger, they immediately try to recast their actions as "just a game." Ralph compares it to playing rugby, and Maurice says they "ought to have a drum" to "do it properly." In this scene, it is clear that the boys are unwilling to face the fact that their civilization is deteriorating.
