Early in the chapter, when Ralph is hiding in the underbrush, but can see some of the other boys, he tells himself that the boys will leave him alone. He even says aloud to himself, "No, they're not as bad as that. It was an accident." A little bit later, he comes across Samneric. Ralph believes that they aren't completely on Jack's side, so he risks talking to them. While they do warn him that he is being hunted by Jack with a stick sharpened on both ends, meaning that Jack intends to treat Ralph the same way he did the pig whose head he put on a stick, this warning finally lets Ralph realize the seriousness of the situation. Until this point, he could argue with himself and tell himself that everything was just a game that got out of hand. Now, he realizes that this is no game and the savagery has overtaken the boys removing all civility from them. They intend to capture and kill Ralph.
