In Lord of the Flies, do you notice a change in language in the course of the story?

Posted by gbeatty on Monday March 2, 2009 at 10:05 AMYes, language is used differently at different points in "Lord of the Flies." Three differences leap to mind immediately. Look at the first few lines of the book. While there are definitely symbolic elements there (the "witch-like cry," the "long scar" in the jungle), you can read it as straightforward description. Later, though, you get two things. First, you get a lot of repetition, as when the boys chat. Second, you get specialized vocabulary like little'uns, showing a new community. Third, you get much more descriptive, unhinged language when Simon has visions.
