First, William Golding was a school head master, so he has had an insight and plenty experience on the psychology and physicality of boys. Second, Ralph is his main character and (many writers would think) in order to reflect the many alter egos of a child who is confused, one can bring in several other boys his own age and undergoing the same circumstances to contrast how each reacts differently from the leader. Hence, the reader would see a 3D version of the main character as exteriorized by the others. Finally, the myth surrounding boys and their basic instincts makes it hard to picture a deserted island full of girls whom might be unfortunately expected to be depicted as hormonal, emotional, catty, and testy.... Personally, I'd go for the boys, myself! They are cool!
