Simon dies when he stumbles into a ritual reenactment of a hunt in which a pig is killed. He's killed because the boys have worked themselves into such a frenzy that they either cannot control themselves, or cannot tell the difference between Simon (a human) and either a pig or the beast. Therefore, a good possible thesis statement about Simon's death would be as follows: The way that Simon is killed shows the danger of the savage mind, and how much of their civilized past the boys have lost.
