In reply to #1: Jack is the one who first suggested a hunt for what Sam and Eric saw. In chapter 6, when the twins come running to Ralph and the others with the news, Jack says, "This'll be a real hunt! Who'll come?" Ralph is the one with sense though who realizes that there might be something out there that could hurt them when he comments that the spears are only wood. He also shows more sense than Jack, who wants to hunt for the thrill of the hunt, when he suggests that the reason for hunting this thing is because they cannot continue to live in fear on a tiny part of the island.
