Find a passage which, in your opinion, most clearly reveals Roger's character in "Lord of the Flies"? Posted by ahmad-s on May 25, 2008. |

I think a good passage would be from Chapter 4, when Roger throws stones at Henry. It shows that Roger, now that he is unsupervised by parents and teachers and the law, has the potential to become a monster: "Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry . . . into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life . . . Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins." What we learn later in the novel is that Roger overcomes his "conditioning" and becomes Jack's savage sidekick. He is the one who releases the rock that kills Piggy, tortures Samneric, and plots to mount Ralph's head on a sharpened stick. Posted by podunc on May 25, 2008. |
