Yes there is a beast, however your question overlooks an important detail, reality is not the same for each of the boys. The 'beast' exists in the thoughts of several of the boys. The differences lie in how the boys interpret the 'beast', whether it is a physical being to be feared or whether it represents psychological fear. Jack believes the beast is physically real, 'proof' to justify his behavior. Simon knows the beast doesn't physically exist, but is very much aware that there is a 'beast' developing within the boys, as their behavior becomes increasingly 'uncivilized'. Ralph is not certain which one is 'the real one', however he is the one who will ultimately understand the interpretations of Jack's motives and Simon's insight. Posted by dbello on Oct 7, 2008. |
