Grandma Dowdel is a bit of a loose cannon, isn't she? I hope you're enjoying this book. It's one of my favorites! Grandma Dowdel is one of the most enjoyable (and ornery!) characters in adolescent literature.
In chapter one, "Shotgun Cheatham's Last Night Above Ground," we find Grandma telling a whopper of a tall tale. When a reporter comes snooping, trying to learn why recently deceased man, Shotgun Cheatham, was called "Shotgun," Grandma...

There is no real "problem" in this story other than Grandma's compulsive lying, and even this is portrayed in a humorous way.
The lact of a real conflict and the meandering story line (events really aren't that tied together) is one reproach critics make of this otherwise very entertaining children's book.
Maybe this lack of cohesion is the "problem" your teacher is hinting at!

The visitation for Shotgun is held in Grandma Dowdel's front room.
Although it is hard to tell exactly what is true and what is not about Shotgun Cheatham, what with the tall tales Effie Wilcox and Grandma Dowdel seem determined to spread about him, it would appear that Shotgun "was just an old reprobate who lived poor and died broke". No one associated with the man much because "he smalled like a polecat...(and) lived in a chicken coop". ...

Grandma says that sixteen-year old Ernie Cowgill is still in the fourth grade.
Grandma has a propensity to exaggerate, so whether the hapless Ernie Cowgill is really still in the fourth grade or not is unclear. Whatever the case, it is quite evident that Ernie is not very bright. The Cowgills are the owners of a dairy farm, and the boys deliver milk and eggs to their customers in a horse-drawn milk wagon. There are four Cowgill boys -...

An annual event is one that takes place once each year. In South Texas, for example, the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show is an annual event. It takes place each year during the same week. In 2010, we will celebrate the 70th Annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. Another example that would be more familiar to more people is the annual event of the ball dropping in Times Square in New York City on New Year's. A non-example of an annual event...

Grandma apparently does agree that two wrongs can make a right. Throughout the book she has no problem lying, cheating, and even blackmailing people to get what she wants. However, since her intentions are always good she believes the ends justify the means. For example, she misleads the banker's wife into believing that Abe Lincoln stayed in Effie Wilcox's house in order to keep the bank from repossessing the house and tearing it down. She...
