Big Mom is the "spiritual leader of the Spokane Tribe", and she gives the drum to Victor after he has just spent the night trying to assert his manhood by experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs. In his drug-induced state, Victor and his friends envision the injustices suffered by the Indians, and, when the drugs have worn off, try to rediscover a sense their identity in a world where they have been completely separated from their past. The drum represents the rich tradition of religion and culture that the Indians have lost; by calling it a pager, Big Mom communicates the idea that if Victor were only to use it to tap back into the old ways, the result "might fill up the whole world" (A Drug Called Tradition").
