Taken individually, the stories in "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" present Victor at different stages in his life.  For example, when the reader is introduced to him in "Every Little Hurricane", Victor is nine years old, and in the second story, "A Drug Called Tradition", he is a teenager.  In "The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation", Victor is most likely in his mid-to late-twenties, "a former basketball star fallen out of shape", enviously watching a new generation of fifteen-year-olds exhibiting the same prowess he had been able to achieve at that age.

Taken as a whole, the book is told largely from the point of view of Victor as an alter-ego of the author, Sherman Alexie.  Alexie was in his late-twenties to possibly his early-thirties when he completed the work, so Victor would be narrating from that vantage point, relating memories of his life from childhood to his present age as a young man.
