While she tried valiantly to maintain the standard of behavior and dress that she had learned at home, her head became turned and she submitted to a "makeover." The dress she wore to the ball was not one that her mother would have approved of as sufficiently modest, and she knew that. When she was caught in the act of flirting by Laurie, she was brought down to earth and faced with the shallowness of this lifestyle.
Meg learned that the simple life is best, that to be attractive means cultivating of one's character rather than one's clothes, and that relationships must be built, not on artifice, but one transparency of character.
