Marmee most likely had mixed feelings about her plans for her daughters.  First, she wanted them to be happy.  Society told Marmee that women were to be quiet, respectful and to serve their husbands and have children.  Marmee knew, however, that her girls would not all be happy in that way.  She wanted them to seek first what their hearts called them to seek.  For Jo, that meant more education, a husband who would challenge her and encourage her, and a life that would not require her to be prim and proper.  For Meg, that would mean a more traditional home and husband.  Meg would need a husband who would care for her, adore her and make her the center of his world.  For Amy, that would mean a "center stage" in life, or, in other words, a husband who would cater to her needs and provide money for all of the things and travel that Amy sought.  For Beth, Marmee wanted most of all health that had escaped her.  In brief, Marmee wanted all of her girls to follow their hearts, find someone to love them and care for them, and to have happiness.
