Syncretism is the blending or melding together of more than one spiritual belief, practice or tradition into a unique system, thereby having the potential to bring together unrelated traditions. The Benandanti in the novel are a secret society that are trying to prevent the rise of the goddess worship cult on the campus and, by extension, in the world. But by trying to suppress this belief, they utilize practices and beliefs that would normally appear to be related to such a belief system, such as astrology, alchemy, astral projection and shamanic journeying.
