The Benandanti in the novel are a secret society that are trying to prevent the rise of the goddess worship cult on the campus and, by extension, in the world. But by trying to suppress this belief, they utilize practices and beliefs that would normally appear to be related to such a belief system, such as astrology, alchemy, astral projection and shamanic journeying.
