By going out on the ledge in order to get his interoffice memo, Tom Benecke almost looses his life. He had already sent his wife alone to the movies and decided his priority that night was to finish the memo, not spend time with his wife. After seeing the ridiculous lengths he went to get the memo and then realizing he could lose his life by falling off the ledge, he begins to realize that people would think he was stupid for dying just because of some kind of memo. He realizes his life and time with his wife are more important than his job. That's why he gets his coat and hat to go find his wife at the end of the story.
