At the end of "Invasion from Mars" by Howard Koch,  Why was the day the Martians landed the "last great day"?

Answers:

  1. I believe it was because that was the last day that humanity felt safe in the *knowledge* that earth was the only inhabited planet, and that humans had some sort of superiority.

    After the invasion, even after the Martians had been killed, the humans now lacked that sense of security they'd had before.

    Now,while they felt safe to a degree, they were also aware of the Martian existence, the Martian's superior inteligence, and that the Martians were still active on other planets.

    Security was gone; Earth's greatness in the universe had been diminished.
