Prior to the jacobian period was the phase of morality plays. The stage functioned as a medium of communication between the religious bodies and the people. The Jacobian plays underwent a drastic shift where the focuss of the drama was shifted from religion towards the individual. The main feature was the display of the horrific, threatening part of the human life.A frequent display of blood-sheds and horror was carried on.The Jacobian protagonist always faced a fearful death which created an unbearable sight for the audience. As evident in Webster's tragedy "The Duchess of Malfi"all the major characters die killing each other proving the horrors of life.
