The movie and the book take place in Tudor England. Henry VIII's last name is Tudor, which is why this time period is often called the "Tudor period." Anne Boleyn was the second wife of Henry VIII, King of England during the 16th century. Why is this important? It is important because, up until this time, the only Christian religion was Catholicism, and divorce was pretty much not practiced. In order for Henry VIII to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, he had to break away from the Catholic church and create the Church of England. This, along with Martin Luther's actions in Germany, brings about the Protestant Reformation.
The Boleyn family was wealthy, upper-class, part of the king's social circle. But, had the king not fallen in love (or lust) with Anne, they'd only be a tiny part of history. Instead, because of the affair between Henry and Anne, the course of history was changed drastically.
As for the affair between Mary (Anne's sister) and Henry, the romance side of things is probably dramatically fictionalized. Mary was known in France as the "Mare of England," because she had a reputation for being "loose."
