Hi, I 'd like to share experiences with composition teachers--any new methods or techniques, especially those methods related to learning based on thinking. Thanx a lot. Posted by benttaibah on Nov 11, 2008. |

One book that is invaluable is "The Practical Writer" by Edward F. Bailey, Jr. This step-by-step approach to writing from the one paragraph to essays to research papers is orderly and understandable to nearly all students. For one thing, this text is a great aid in teaching students to use supporting details and to use logical reasoning. Another book that is helpful is "Unstuck: A Supportive and Practical Guide to Working Through Writer's Block" by Jane Anne Straw. Posted by mwestwood on Nov 12, 2008. |

I highly recommend "The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing" by Michael Harvey (Hackett Publishing Company). It is a very short text (100 pages), but if the students understand and apply the simple guidelines that are there, their writing will improve. You can take a look at it online at http://nutsandbolts.washcoll.edu/plainstyle.htm (in fact, I think it's the entire text and is, in some ways, easier to use depending on your learning style).
