What novels are you reading in your English I college prep classrooms? I am new to English I and didn't know which novels were popular for the English I classes. Posted by mimiteacher on Oct 3, 2009. |

I would think that Homer would be a part of the reading list for college prep classes. Both The Iliad and The Odyssey would top that list. Continuing with this, Sophocles' "Oedipus" and "Antigone" are works that students read. Shakespeare's "King Lear" is a nice complement to Sophocles, also. Posted by akannan on Oct 4, 2009. |

When I taught Freshman English, I usually did not use that many novels. I focused instead on world literature, selecting dramatic classics such as The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, and Antigone. One reason for these selections was because students loved reading selections from plays aloud, which helped me keep them engaged. There are also some excellent film adaptations of these works; video text can be very helpful with difficult texts, such as Shakespeare. What I worked on was helping student learn to identify themes and see where themes were similar across the centuries. Posted by mrsmonica on Oct 4, 2009. |

Post #3 covers most of what we do at our school. I would add that we read Great Expectations and Les Miserables in college prep freshman courses. There is the option of also teaching King Arthur material which most of us do because it is fun and the kids really enjoy it. Posted by amy-lepore on Oct 5, 2009. |

I need help. I have been an elementary and middle school teacher for the past 14 years. I have the opportunity to teacher in a college. I have to do a 15 minute teaching demo. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do for a demo for a college faculty? I have taught GED but it's totally different, any suggestions would be helpful.
