In the conversation between Holmes and the cabman in The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes questions the cabman as to his actions earlier when he drove a man to spy on other men. The cabman verbally retraces his steps for Holmes, telling where he picked up the stranger, identified as a detective, where they went, who was watched and what happened on Regent Street where the passenger of the cab saw and recognized Holmes and cried out to the cabbie to go immediately and quickly to the Waterloo train station. As a parting gesture, the man turned back to the cabbie and gave his name as Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, taken aback at first, recognizes that the man was sending a message that Holmes had been seen and that the man was prepared to contend unafraid with Holmes, who labels the man a worthy adversary in the quest to solve the mystery at hand at the Baskerville's.
