After Mama Elena sends Tita away, see meets and old Indian woman who tells her the story of the matchbook. She says that inside of each person there is a "matchbook". Little things light our matches; a lover's kiss, the birth of a son or daughter, etc; but sometimes something intense happens. Something that lights all the matches at once and transports the person to a state of utter bliss and happiness so powerful that the person cannot survive.
