In Like Water for Chocolate "Eden" is described as being the place that transcendence occurs. After Mama Elena sends Tita away, see meets and old Indian woman who tells her the story of the matchbook. She says that inside of each person there is a "matchbook". Little things light our matches; a lover's kiss, the birth of a son or daughter, etc; but sometimes something intense happens. Something that lights all the matches at once and transports the person to a state of utter bliss and happiness so powerful that the person cannot survive.
