zoology and religion are alot alike if looked at in the right perspective...
zoology is the branch of biology that deals with animals and animal life, including the study of the structure, physiology(the study of the function of living things, including processes such as nutrition, movement, and reproduction), development, and classification of animals...
now look at the bolded words from the previous paragraph...
you can probably see how religion fits into them...
- structure- the way the religion is set up that seperates it from other religions
- movement- religions move from place to place
- development- religion develops over time
- classification- each religion is classified...hinduism, islamic, christianity...
in conclusion...Pi studies both because he sees the importance of and loves both of them. he grew attatched to both while he was growing up and it probably helps him cope with the loss of everything he loved by studying stuff he loves. the whole story is also about religion and animals(animals symbolize animals and events in religious texts and stories). they are both things that are set in stone, but at the same time can change over years and time....
...i hope i helped answer your question, but if you don't understand my response feel free to reply back to it and ask me questions...good luck
