The island is inhabited by meerkats, which Richard Parker gorges on. At night, Pi sleeps in the trees, safely among the meerkats. But he finds a perfect set of teeth in the leaves of a tree showing him the island is carnivorous. He will die if he stays here, and must summon the courage to board the boat once again. Martel tells us he choose meerkats because the word was similar to mirage.
