How does "Life of Pi" relate to the claim that this is a story "that will make you believe in God"?

When the investigators state that they think the story with animals is the better story, Pi answers "Thank you. And so it goes with God." What do you think Pi meant by that? How does it relate to the claim that this is a story "that will make you believe in God"?

    Remember that Pi was surrounded by animals (his father was a zookeeper), and that for his entire time on the raft, his companions were animals, not humans. All the wonder of nature—the weather, the flying fish, the water, and, of course, the tiger—became the wonders of his world. In that section he's saying that yes, the other story is more logical, but that in the presence of animals, there is an experience of being with God. He's essentially arguing outward from his own connection with them and his own experience, saying, you could have this experience, and God has this experience. To see a tiger is to realize there is a God.

    A beautiful line for a beautiful book.
