Pi's religious beliefs contrast with the evolutionary influence which Martel is trying to explore. The whole novel debates religion and science- with religion winning in the end as it's chosen as the "better story" .
Richard Parker represents Pi's will to live in theĀ animal story- which actually may be survival instinct or may be God...However, Pi often compares himself to God.Therefore, Pi's religious beliefs are important as the audience acn then choose which story they prefer...
