Pi knows enough from living at the zoo to know how to train the animals and predict their behavior. For example, Pi intentionally makes Richard Parker seasick and then blows the whistle as loud and for as long as he can so that the tiger will associate the feeling with the whistle. When Pi deals with the tiger, he stares him down and never turns away because he knows that will show weakness. The tiger urinates on one side of the boat which marks his territory so Pi spreads his urine in another area to mark his own territory. When on the island, Pi teaches Richard Parker to do tricks so that the tiger continues to know that Pi is the one in charge.
