I believe wholeheartedly that the blind frenchman was an allegorical character, ment to represent Ravi. I wonder this because Pi calls F.M "brother" in nearly every sentence, which causes me to wonder if either was really blind, and if Pi is attempting to hide his guilt over killing Ravi for food, and how he let Richard Parker become out of control, nearly losing his humanity. that is an interesting thought, but while i was reading the book i thought that the french man was the cook because he ate a man and a woman (the mom and sailor). plus, what are the possibilities that Pi would happen across another blind man in the middle of an ocean... plus, would anyone really eat their own brother, even if they were starving? In reply to #2: That is true, concerning the man and the woman, but it seems rather strange that Pi would call him brother so many times, and Pi had already killed the cook before this chance meeting with the French Man. The possibilities are silm to none, but when we think about possibilities concerning Life of Pi, we have to have "faith" rather, and this story is full of dios ex machina (god from the machine, used to describe far to coeincidental occurances) and love, people will do a lot of disgusting things regarding their own survival. Even eat their own brothers. Pi also says very clearly that he had lost control over Richard Parker once he was attacked by The french man, so even if he didnt want too, RP's desires where far more powerful then that of an indian boys. (if you believe Pi and Richard Parker are the same person, this applies.) Posted by mezzaine on Sep 27, 2009. |
