I believe wholeheartedly that the blind frenchman was an allegorical character, ment to represent Ravi. I wonder this because Pi calls F.M "brother" in nearly every sentence, which causes me to wonder if either was really blind, and if Pi is attempting to hide his guilt over killing Ravi for food, and how he let Richard Parker become out of control, nearly losing his humanity.
