This novel by Mildred D. Taylor begins during the Depression era of the 1930's, in Mississippi. The novel is a follow-up on Taylor's "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry." It is about the Logan Family and the discrimination they and their African-American neighbors face during this era in the South. At the beginning of the story AJ is facing a trial for a murder he didn't commit, however, because he is black he doesn't have a chance at a fair trial and he is convicted and sentenced to death.
