Why does the occupation of Ichabod Crane change from a teacher to a constable in Tim Burton's film version of 'Sleepy Hollow?'

in the origional version ichabod is described as a school teacher, why did tim burton feel the need to change the occupation of ichabod crane? was it relevent to make the film more intresting or scary ect..

    My guess is that it was for what you call 'economy of effect' - that is to say that within a limited frame (the length of the film in this case), making the character profile (Icabod's in this case) fit into the story line as conveniently as possible. It is more logical for a detective or police inspector to investigate a crime than a simple schoolteacher to do so; his role is more believable in this way. The "storyteller" (here, the film director!) can then focus on other things, such as getting the plot underway or adding significant description.
