    According to Sleepy Hollow lore, Old Brouwer--who unwisely does not believe in ghosts--meets the Headless Horseman as he is returning from Sleepy Hollow one night.  Together, they travel through the swamp until they reach the infamous covered bridge.  At this point, the horseman turns into a gruesome skeleton and throws Old Brouwer into the water, never to be heard from again.
